That's the problem with TV. Most people tell researchers that they want something 'new and fresh' and then do not feel comfortable with 'new and fresh.'
What heavy TV consumers appear to really want is the same thing, slightly re-packaged. So that's mostly what's out there. Programmers saw Mad Men being successful so they created Pan Am and the Playboy Club. They saw the recent Julia Louis-Dreyfus show being successful, so they came up with the new Whitney Cummings and Zoey Deschanel shows... Scripted shows are now seen as being a big risk. "Reality" rules.
