I've had something similar.
Woke up one night and everything was spinning really hard. Crazy, where I couldn't stand up.
I had no idea what it was, but it was a little alarming, esp. when it wouldn't go away.
Went to the ER, and they said it was vertigo.
I'd had it mildly in the past, a kind of "positional" vertigo, that would happen when I was working under the car, etc. Where your head is face up, then to the side, then standing up, etc. - changing positions a lot.
I didn't get it much after that, but when I did, the over the counter motion sickness medications always stopped it cold. I would get Bonine, but I think most of the OTC motion sickness stuff has the same active ingredient.
As odd as it sounds, I think mine was stress related. It happened to me mostly around 10 years ago, when I was working on matters where tens or hundreds of millions, and people's jobs and livelihood, were on the line. And working crazy hours (12-15 a day) 7 days a week. I've slowed that down, gotten in good physical shape again, and haven't had any vertigo for at least 6 or 7 years.
