You could consider sub-categories -- stock or modified, for example.
Have you contacted the 914/6 registry? (I can dig up their contact info if you need it) They at least have a database of VIN's they've seen in the print/electronic media over that last few years...
But I think you're right. 300 seems low to me, but I have no reason for saying that. When I was shopping for mine, I saw a total of 6 or 8 for sale that year. Hmmm....
