As far as Hydrogen is concerned, here is a Wikipedia article for you that has lots of links outlining State and Federal grants, loans, incentives, tax breaks, etc that Ford, GM, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Honda, and several others have taken advantage of:

There are several similar initiatives to advance battery technology, alternative fuels, hybrid technology, and other transportation related tech that the major manufacturers (US and foreign) have taken government money.
They would be foolish not to.
