I think what needs to be remembered was that back in the day, I think the folks that traveled by air were pretty much the rich and privileged. Anyone and everyone on the plane paid first class fairs.

If every seat on the planes these days were first class and they all had the associated cost, things would be different, but a lot of us wouldn't know it because we may have never been on a plane. We'd all be hanging in tiny rooms below decks on a crappy ship hoping the capt didn't ram us into an iceberg.
