Deal was I had to provide and pay for my own insurance right from Day #1. I suggest the same for all parents of newly-minted drivers. It puts the real cost of things in perspective immediately, encourages responsibility and is a very good primer for transitioning from kid to adult with real responsibilities. YMMV. Best of luck.
