Arrgh. The story of my life. I do renovating of my own places for a living and come accross this sort of thing all the time. You need to find a balance between was is correct and what looks correct. Old houses/altered houses; sometimes you just have to get a lid back on that can of worms.

A good trick is to pull up some flooring from where it won't be seen such as pantry or under cabinets and CAREFULLY patch that into the refridgerator location. Another thing, regarding the cabinets, you can replace the doors which gives a new look to it and counter tops are easy.

The job I'm doing at the moment... It would have been easier to completely rebuild the whole back quarter of the house.
