Zeke,
I have a '69 with a transmission that both sings and grinds. It's not a very happy unit.

I just bought what I hope is a "known good" used 901 5sp from tom1234racing for $400+ shipping. It's a massive understatement to say that this route is less expensive than a rebuild. I think the cost of the used unit times two might do just the R&P work that both of our transmissions need. SHAMELESS PLUG: I've bought some other stuff from tom, he seems to have a very large selection of parts, especially early parts, and I've always felt he's given me a good deal.

If you have lots of money, then get it done right and have the piece of mind. I have a very time consuming job, 2 cats, 2 other cars, a pregnant wife, a 3yo daughter, and I live in one of the most expensive places in the country. Resources, both money and time are scarce. I try to spend Porsche money in amounts roughly equal to how much I drive it. (once a week or so) I do all my own wrenching, and my time is extremely valuable too, so time to change a tranny is much lower than rebuilding.

With the amount I drive, I suspect this used transmission will get me around until I actually have the time and money to leap off the top of the slippery slope.

Good Luck!
-Dan
