My next project...
My mother's six year old 50" Sony Grand Wega TV dies the other day. It still works, but there is a large yellow section in the middle of the screen and everything that's supposed to be white or a very light color is instead yellow.
She called Sony and they said that there is a known issue with the TV and that it would cost $1200 or so to fix it, but they would sell her a brand new 55" TV (Model KDL-55EX500) for $500. She has to send them pictures of the TV with the serial number and a picture showing what the yellow screen looks like.
When she gets her new TV, she's giving us her old TV to see if I can fix it. I looked up Sony Model KDF-E50A10 on eBay and there are some parts for sale. I paid $8 for a PDF of the repair manual and it will help me greatly as it has the diagnostic codes in it.
I'm hoping to be able to determine the component that's failed, locate the part on eBay and then replace it. As long as I don't put too much $ into this, it may be a worthwhile endeavor.
I'm impressed with the way Sony treated my mother and she's very happy. My next TV will definitely be a Sony!
