The gauges going funny when switching on the headlights is definitely a ground. I wont say what to do or where to look because I'm not 100% sure since it's an early car and I do not want to lead you in the wrong direction. I'm sure someone else will be able to give more details but I know in the late cars the headlight grounds are under the hood and near the drivers side headlights.
