If you'd have been willing to bet on that, my small dog would have earned me your money. I don't know what your experience has been, but raccoons have always taken a worse beating than they've given to my dogs. My experience with Rottweilers, Maremma Sheep Dogs, raccoons and coyotes, has led me to believe that the dogs discussed here would be very effective protection from raccoons, coyotes, and pretty much anything likely to wander in your yard short of a grizzly or mtn. lion.
Oh, and if you're used to a command oriented dog, one of those sheep dogs may not be to your tastes. They don't necessarily want your input.
