Mine was the logic board died on the primary server. What I don't understand is why the root DNS didn't forward to secondary. I am doing poor man's border protocol. That is two ISP connections with a name server on each connection. Each points to their own IP set for servers. My firewall router routes both sets of IPs to their respective servers in the DMZ. If my primary internet connection goes down root servers should send requests to secondary that is on the other ISP and point to those IPs for my servers.
In this case my primary DNS went down and roots did not forward requests to secondary DNS. My servers were still live so showed up until the TTLs ran out. I have them set to 3 minutes. Looked like the TTLs were 2 days and then still didn't try to resolve to secondary DNS.
