On a recent outing my 76 912E started blowing smoke through the heater vents and smoke screened the highway behind me. After pulling over, I noticed a major oil leak at the passenger side of the engine leaking onto the exhaust which created the smoke screen. There was also oil sprayed all over the rear wheel well and passenger side quarter panel. A friend following me on the freeway had oil sprayed on his windshield. I had the car towed home since I didn't want to risk driving on low oil and smoke in the cabin.

Before this, I had a few minor oil leaks (who doesn't?) but this major leak was a sudden occurence that happened at 80 mph. Engine was at normal operating temperature and still runs/sounds good.

Any ideas on what happened and what is the fix?
