Helps to have the car on jack stands and remove the rear wheels.
When I get frustrated, I pop the end of the retaining bale out of the forward facing head with a big screwdriver. Other than that, it a slow process. Happy to hear it's just the cover gaskets!
When you install new gaskets, make sure to clean the covers and glue the gaskets in. 3m trim adhesive works well.
