I hate to sound negative, but Marbella and the costa del sol is horribly overbuilt, and IMO truly the ugliest side of Spain. If you want to live among low rent Brits and Germans in tacky tourist developments—that would be the place.
I'd head for the Atlantic coast—or Seville or Barcelona—and try to find some reasonably authentic neighborhood and get stuck into some real local culture.
