Wouldn't the screens that pop in do the same thing? There seem to be many, many variations. I like the idea of a cover over an open cell foam. I also just did a google image search for "gutter guard" and saw another option that I can't imagine would work as well, but may. It is essentially a large pipe cleaner that filles the gutters. I suppose the real benefit would be that pulling it out would probably pull most of the crud with it.
