I have no idea why it changes as far as direct cable versus wireless unless they go thru different inputs to the motherboard and your ethernet card is bad.
I had a problem with my DSL speed dropping to a crawl. The line was at the correct speed but my computer was gosh-awful slow. After much head scratching, it ended up being a problem with a recent Flash update. I uninstall/reinstalled Flash and the speed came back.
