I have used a pair of Shimano 737 pedals for what seems like forever. Great pedals but a bit on the heavy side and bad in mud. Otherwise bomb proof.
I have Speedplays on the road bike and they were a little different to start but allow older knees to move around a bit more during the pedal stroke (float).
Have a look at some half decent pedals and try em out!
