I'm in private practice. One (minor) income stream is to do these evaluations, which are organized by the state's board of workman's comp. You get paid by the insurance company, but these are intended to be independent evaluations (you're neither for the injured worker, nor for the insurance company). You're not allowed to treat these patients, so that reduces any secondary gain (i.e. you need a surgery, and I can provide it for you). I do probably less than one per month.
