A brief update. The slide downhill is inevitable and moves in fits and starts. Since posting this my dad has been in and out of the hospital first due to infections (that is ongoing). He's had some episodes of being "out there" and one night at home he got up and fell, banging his head. After a trip to the ER, he came back home and the next night got up in the middle of the night and fell and broke his hip. So back to the hospital for surgery (and another infection). Yesterday he was transferred to a nursing home for rehab which will probably be there for anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months. This has put any cancer treatment on hold which is probably a good thing as I don't think radiation therapy is going to improve quality of life.
If anything all of this reinforces the concept that you only have today and you should do the things you want to do now. Also nothing ever stays the same and to expect otherwise will just make you miserable. Hug your kids, hug your parents, do it today.
