Been in a situation like that. We were doing a swim call somewhere off the west coast of south america. I was topside with a few others (including the captain) when some large waves started coming from the side (normally they point the bow into the waves to keep them from washing over topside). After the first one crashed over and a bunch of water went down the hatch, they shut the hatch from the inside with us still topside. Made our way to the sail and climbed the ladder on the side to the top so we could get in through the sail hatch. Lost one of my flip-flops, a towel and a pack of smokes.
