If you want to manage your photo library, check out Adobe Photoshop Lightroom versus Photoshop. If you're interested in heavier pixel-level editing, then Photoshop Elements is far more affordable and approachable with a lot of the power of the full Photoshop. A new version (10) just came out I believe.

I switched to Lightroom when v.3 came out and virtually never need anything else, although I do use some 3rd-party (Nik Software) plug-ins from time to time.
