I used a bunch of coats of Birchwood Casey Tru-oil IIRC on mine and I guess I do not understand why you are re-cutting the checkering after finishing the wood. I would assume you would want it to remain sealed in the oil finish.
Just curious as I have never messed with checkering (yet).
