Dash Pad Overlay -

Hey Tychain, Naturally, replacing the original leather dash covering with new leather would be preferred. Just about everyone has read a number of write-ups by 928 owners who have tried the dash overlay and were not happy with the long-term results. While helping a couple of friends take the less expensive option - I have installed 4 dash overlays that turned out very nice even after several years on the road.

Although it’s considered a fairly major operation, first remove the complete dash onto a work bench. After the old leather outer covering, the defrost vents (along the top and at each end of the dash) are removed - you’ll have the original factory padded dash remaining on it’s metal under frame.

Thoroughly rough up and cross hatch the exposed original dash pad using a drill and small wire wheel. Fit the overlay into position a couple of times as you trim off any edges or raised padding that may prevent a perfect fit - then apply lots of a good quality upholstery glue to mate everything together. I used thick folded bathroom towels across the complete dash with an assortment boards and “C” clamps to hold the new dash cover tightly in place while it dries a couple of days.

Perhaps the one's who were not happy with the long term installation of the overlay used a silicone glue - the 3M upholstery glue we applied is holding up well so far. One other comment - None of these cars are daily drivers and are parked inside most of the time. Perhaps this is also a factor in the satisfaction of these owners.

Just my opinion - Michael
