They're very reliable, between my 996 & 986 I've owned one for a combined two years or so. Other than the seatbelt airbag sensors needing replaced in my last 996 I've only done scheduled maintenance. The IMS and RMS issues are real but rare, and I'm not sure what heater line and other issues you are referring to. The only other super common issue that I can think of is the ignition switch going bad, my new 996 is a bit temperamental and I plan on replacing it ($30 at Pelican). Honestly they're awesome cars and they just work, I've drive mine all over the place without worry. I love the air-cooled cars, but for daily driver duty these are vastly superior.
