Trust me, I am not Lance Romance, but I try and stay aware during the year and listen to what my wife has opinions about and then buy accordingly.
I actually send an email to myself when I hear something promising gift wise.
Again, I only know a few things but hitting a triple on our anniversary and a dinger on her birthday are tasks a troglodyte such as myself can manage.
BTW, my wife is, in horse parlance, an easy keeper: no muss no fuss. The price of the gift, as we all know, is for a well sorted woman less import than the thought that goes into it (to a certain point).
An observation that has worked for me:
If you go practical, have an emotional nugget, something meaningful as a follow up. This Christmas is iPad central, which she wants and will use. I then found some original sheet music she talked about eight months ago.
So, run the tapes back, talk to your kids (also key since they hear things better than we do), look at the magazines she gets, etc.
