The only new BMW I would buy is a 1M without any packages because it is basic. Overall, I think the company is lacking in quality and including many electronics that will fail after the warranty is up. If you read roundel, Mike Miller is always stating this and how he dislikes the direction that BMW is going. My girlfriend's mom has a new 7 series and she really dislikes it compared to her old 750iL. I have driven both, and I would say that the new one just doesn't feel as solid as her previous one and is absolutely loaded with electronics. I was then told that she learned one thing from this car, and it was to look at other cars (SLK, Panemera) before looking at the next generation of the model that you previously owned.
I did play around with iDrive in that car, and it was not terrible bad. However, I am a computer geek and have an intuition with this stuff. It just seems like they are going against their consumer base (old people) with the 7 series by including so many electronics. The one thing I liked about iDrive is that you can set the fans to activate once in awhile to bring in fresh air.
