I just dropped my engine and gearbox at home, single-handed. I took it slow, follwing the Porsche workshop manual and Oz51 webpage (see below) and everything went smoothly. In the process of putting it back now, nearly there.
For you 996 Carrera 4 Tiptronic guys, the Porsche manual does not cover every aspect of the engine/tranny drop. The Tiptronic box is different to Carrera; it has a 3 bolt flange to drive the front wheels thru a propshaft. To get to these 3 bolts you need to support the tranny at the propshaft end with your jack, remove the two long side-by-side tranny support thru bolts and remove the wing shaped tranny support / propshaft cover. Once this cover is removed, put at least one of the thru bolts back. Remove the three bolts (or 2 if you cannot get to the 3rd). Now drop the engine as per the Porsche instructions, but do not remove the tranny carrier (no need). Once you have it lowered about 4 inches at the tranny end, you should be able to get the 3rd bolt. Slide the propshaft off the tranny flange and rope the propshaft to the tranny carrier. Be carefull, the front wheel end of the propshaft will slide out, revealing the splines (it is push-fit)....
