The "perfect" combustion chemical formula is: O2(oxygen) + HC(hydrocarbon) --> CO2(carbon dioxide) + H20(water).
-"Stochiometry" is when this takes place, at a mixture ratio of 14.7:1 with complete combustion. In real world circumstances, there are many variables which affect this.
-The amount of CO2 produced is generally the measure of HC combusted(usually engine size).
HC is the byproduce of incomplete combustion. It is like raw fuel from the tailpipe.
NOX(Nitrous oxides) is formed under conditions of 2400+deg (hot/high compression engine), and with an excess of O2.
-NOX is usually "cleaned up" by the second half of 3-way catalytic converters which contains the more expensive paladium.
CO is the product of incomplete non-stochiometric combustion(too much fuel)
-The first half of a catalytic converter(the old 2-way cat) cleaned up CO by spontainiously combusting it with ambient O2 over plates of platinum. That's what the old air injector pump was for.
