I grew up seeing him in Dragnet, old westerns, etc.
Here's a scene from M*A*S*H that may pull on one's heartstrings today:
It at the end of the episode "Change in Command" when his arrives as the new CO.
Col. Potter, Hawkeye & BJ are in the Swamp at night introducing the new CO to the hooch from their still, and it ends with them singing, initially off-key, but merging into harmony as the camera pulls back from the outside of the tent:
