Guys, need some suggestions

Have an HDMI-out jack on my HP laptop and an HDMI-in on the Sony flatscreen TV. Would like to stream Netflix from the laptop as I'm too cheap to buy a new streaming DVD player.

The problem is I can't get the laptop to be friends with the TV. The TV is switched to the correct HDMI port, and cabled direct to the HDMI-out on the laptop.

I've actually tried 2 HP laptops, and can't get a signal off to the TV. Odds are I'm missing something easy, but don't know what. It's like the HDMI out is dead. I've tried duplicating an external display with Windows, extending the display, etc. and can't make this talk.

Need some suggestions/directions. Isn't the HDMI-out on the PC just a live jack? I also tried restarting the PC with the connections hooked up, but no-go.

P.S., the flat screen is not internet-ready and does not have a LAN jack anyway.
