Freudian analyses suggests that a fear of elevators (and getting stuck in elevator shafts) is really a deep rooted fear of vaginas. The symbolism is rather obvious.
Vagina-related fears in men are common. One of the most common is "vagina dentata". (Literally that the "vagina has teeth".) Equally common are performance-related fears.
Because it is deeply un-masculine to admit to such fear, the unconscious transfers that fear to vagina symbols such as elevators and tunnels.
A bit of therapy may be in order for you boys.
