In 68 while living in Germany my father bought a 55 190 SL that was sitting in a barn. We are second owner. Painted it Porsche gold and did a tan interior with brown carpeting. Did a few motor and electrical mods and put Felt on the hardtop.
Felt is like GI Joe doll hair, very cool stuff, he also did a 57 300 coupe entirely in blue Felt, never had to wax the car, just brush it, used to freak him out when the cats sat on it.
Anyway back then the cars were just used Mercedes's and not worth a lot.
Mom drove the 190 daily and after a minor wreck the 300 sat in the garage for 10 years.
Today they are both restored to original factory condition. The 190 is one of the most stunning cars I have ever seen. It has been used in movies, fashion shoots, an album cover and has never placed lower than 1st in any show or competition. They both get torn down and restored every few years. During the 1st restore we discovered that the 190 is the 7th one produced, it is the oldest 190 on the road.
My point, while not a v8 conversion we customized the car and enjoyed it the way we wanted it for 15 years and then we restored it and have enjoyed it in it's original condition ever since.
Do what makes you happy.
It's not what you do in life that you regret, it's what you could have done but did'nt.
