When I was younger and got more practice, I could drink a fair amount. These days, I hardly drink at all. If I have more than a drink these days I can feel it and if I have a few, I feel it the next day. I think a lot of it is what you're used to.
That said, drink lots of fluid with your alcohol. Alcohol is a diuretic, and I believe a big cause of the headache is dehydration. I occasionally have a "hangover" (similar headache) from a long day working out in the heat with lots of sweating.
Also, when I bartended, I had a few guys that said that when they started ordering their drinks in tall glasses (extra mix, soda, water, etc...) they stopped getting hangovers.
