I'm confused. On my iPhone 4S all Google Maps does is give me a list of maneuvers and a map. When I arrive at the place for the turn, the app doesn't say anything. If I'm not watching the blue dot on the screen, I don't know it is time to turn. Am I missing something?

I use Google Maps but it isn't a great nav app for driving. No automatic recalculation. No turn by turn directions. No audio directions. I end up having to hold and peer at the screen. It feels unsafe, and with all the accidents caused by smartphone use while driving, I think it is time for me to find a safer solution.



Do any of the TomTom, Navigon, or Ware solutions mentioned have all of these:

- Store maps locally

- Auto recalculation

- Turn by turn

- Spoken directions

Huh? Other than storing maps locally Google Maps/Navigation does all of that on my phone. Plus, I can give it verbal commands like "Navigate to 123 Main St."
