The Remmington 870 is a good choice. So is a Mossberg 550. If you really want to go nuts, get a Saiga 12, but personally I'd use one of the first two for simplicity, ease of operation and less potential for stuff to go wrong.
They're both excellent and a 12-gauge is about as good as you're going to get for a home invasion/defense kind of situation. PRACTICE with it, plan ahead (angles, sight lines, what's beyond for a particular shot, etc.)
