One of my co-workers (actually his wife) has an M5 and they both love it. I think it is about a 2005 or 2006.
However, they live in Oklahoma on two six-figure salaries.
M5s are awsome, but when they need service, you do not want to be on the check-writing side of that business transaction. In that regard, an M5 is similar to a turbo Carrerra.
Then there is the M6...............
