You might talk to the folks over at Tangerine Racing in CT. Chris and Ed are great guys (I haven't met Chris in person yet, but have dealt with him on the BBSes a lot; I have met Ed several times in person) and should steer you right. They may also be able to help you with test driving a 914 to see how it matches your memory. I know that Ed had a very original 76 914 a number of years back, even down to the 165-width tires, and it was a real reminder of how the 914 originally drove.
