356 Zenith Accelerator Pump Vial
Having worked professionally on a lot of 356's, one of the most common problems on the cars is the incorrect replacement of the original distributor with a Bosch 009. The reason is always the same, cost. Why would I want to spend in excess of $500 for the correct one when this 009 only costs me under $100? Well first of all, the 009 was designed for a stationary industrial engine, its advance curve is not the right one for a 356 engine. To get teh proper amount of total advance you need to have about 18 to 20 degrees of initial, so the engine will not idle and is hard to start hot. So what a lot of people do is set the initial to about 10 or 12 and try to get rid of the tremendous flat spot by richening up the accelerator pumps. I have seen this a lot of times, it is really sad.. When you put in the correct distributor, now you have to correct the accelerator pumps and there is only one tool that will let you do that correctly, the graduated glass vial from Porsche. I am selling mine, since I retired I no longer need it.. I want $50 for it and that is below what you can get one for anywhere else.. Free shipping and it comes in a thick silicone tube to protect it from breakage. It is hard to see scale here but this piece is only about 1.5 inches long.
