Yes, what happened THIRTY FIVE years ago should certainly dictate your actions today

If anything, diesels should have more valvetrain wear, turbo or not.

Gasoline powered turbos, if engineered as forced-fed from the start, should live as long as a naturally aspirated gasoline motor. They're more complicated, and there's more to go wrong (more parts), but their life span is no more or less.
