Online dating has a set of unwritten rules, just like the bar, grocery store, etc. It is simply a way to look at a much larger pool of candidates and then try and figure out who may be interesting. It takes time and effort to make it work and you have to learn to read between the lines. As a guy if you think the way it works is to put up your profile and the hotties beat a path to your door then you're sadly mistaken. The attractive women get plenty of attention. The men have to make the first move and it has to be done correctly (not a "wink" or other pansy bs). A brief but well written email works best, along with your profile being an honest representation of yourself - and hopefully you're not boring in real life. You have to differentiate yourself from the other guys as some women get tons of emails.

In the couple of years I was on match I met and dated some great women. But I was the one that had to do the work to find them. I only had one time where a smokin' hot women pinged me out of the blue.

It isn't magic. It is a tool. And if you don't take the time to learn how to use the tool it won't work.
+1

I met my fiance on eHarmony. We're getting married in September.

Over the last 3 years (since getting divorced) I met a lot of women on line. Sure I met some duds and some fatties, but I also met some of the most amazing women I've ever dated. Women with PhDs, women who are stunningly attractive, women who get picked up on all the time in real life.

You're the man, so you've got to do the work. Whether that means picking up women at the bar, the gym, the bookstore or whatever. Don't blame the tool just because you don't know how to use it.
