One of the functions of the cases in higher end detectors is to sheild the detector from external radio interference. If you disassemble the detector, chances are it will not work properly.
Instead I would invest in a system that's designed to have remote sensors. I think K40 makes one that is pretty good. Still , no substitute for a Valentine.
You have the right idea that detectors mounted low are much less effective. Radar is SOMEWHAT like of sight. THe higher the detector is mounted, the farther it can "see". THink about it -- If you were looking for a radar trap up the road, would you lay low to the ground by your grill, or would you stand up and look out on the horizon?'
THe V1 mounted on the visor or at the top of the windsheild is still the best deal in town... Talk to those who make a habit of driving fast on public roads, there is no substitute.
