"stopping power" == shot placement. Meaning a well placed .22LR can stop humans effectively. IMO caliber choice is not nearly as important as gun fit and handling. I am not buying this gun for SD...it is part of a new sport that I am taking up with my son. All my firearms are locked away - accessible within a minute or two but definitely not 'handy'.

All I can say is try to borrow/rent as many handguns as you can prior to buying. That advice has been echoed on this board by many and is sound. Once I had the field narrowed down to 3 I put 100 rounds through them back to back to make my final decision. I expect this M&P to be my one and only handgun...well it and a 686...honest...
