Has anyone ever replaced the entire shift rod?

I have to go throug hthe entire linkage to find the problem and am wondering about removing what is in there to rebuild. Inspect every part and replace what is needed. I understand the getting into the tunnel is a pain, any stories to help, or things to look for?
