One of the cats dragged himself into the house after being MIA for a couple days. After he lay on the bed and didn't move for about 12 hours straight, Mrs. Noah figured something was wrong. He had an abscess on his butt like you describe.
At first I thought it might have been one of the other cats in the neighborhood (there's a black one that swings by our house episodically). But during the day the cats seem to cross paths peacefully. So maybe it was one of the nasty bowling-ball raccoons that did the deed.
