I built several CO2 dragsters in industrial art class back in jr high and high school. We did all kinds of crazy stuff to make them as light and fast as possible. The key was they had to survive the race without breaking or you where disqualified. We would buy these dragster kits and put the wheels on a lathe to reduce the weight and contact surface. We would make special axles and try different lubes on them. I just read they are making the exterior surfaces resemble a dimpled golf ball surface to reduce drag by 50%. I made one that placed in national competiton in Kansas City back in about 1982. It got down the 65 ft track in about half a second (0.558). They use a nylon string as a guide wire that they connect to through eyelets attached to the car. This keeps them on course and safe.
