One thing I've noticed over the years of buying used cars: Dealers never (or hardly ever) provide the new buyer with historical maintenance records. Probably because that info would probably scare off a new potential buyer or don't want to waste the time waiting for the buyer to go through it all. As far as Carfax is concerned, I take their info with a grain of salt. My wife and I bought a Boxster from a Porsche dealer with a clean Carfax only to find out after one of the new Michelin Pilots on the rear ground down to the cords that the car had been t-boned in the rear and had been repaired but the suspension hadn't been re-aligned.
Thatshould have been on the Carfax. With any of these cars, if there's no documentation regarding belts, water pump or service history (including the 16valve chain guide) I'd plan on replacing them before too long. Don't want to throw water on this new aquisition that your and your lady bought, but if it breaks because of these items, it can become the source of a lot of "I told you so's". Good luck and have fun.
