the aqualung "scuba apparatus" was invented by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Émile Gagnan in the winter of 1942-1943 when they adapted and improved the demand regulator invented by someone else for underwater use.
the fun fact here is I just happen to have one of those laying around the house I picked up 40 or so years ago. threw it in a closet or somewhere 35 years ago and it's been sitting there ever since I believe. yeah, I've inherited the hoarder disorder from my father's side of the family.
