The best exhaust you can put on a turbo is a trumpet type bell off the turbo. Makes more power than open. An exhaust like Lindsey Racing's 4 inch that increases in size from the down pipe to the muffler does very well. Just don't use a flow master muffler, they are way too loud.
On an NA motor, bigger is not necessarily better. It is more about tuning for flow, pulse timing, and back pressure. Burst did very well on my 914. My 928 has an X-pipe, which is a way to merge the pulses between dual exhausts. On a 944 I imagine it would be all about the header collector, header runner size/lengths/bends, and post header resonation to tune help tune the back pressure pulses all to draw the charge from the cylinder while the exhaust valve is open.
