"Free Ride" by Bill Delaney
Saw it when it hit the circuit the first time and then after the revisions the second time. But unlike other classic surf films this one was never available in VHS (or later in DVD) but one day --- years ago --- I found an eBay auction for (3) VHS copies. The seller claimed he had brought them back from Oz himself and they were complete good quality and the real deal. I immediately bought all three! I wound up giving one copy to a buddy and still have the other two (in a very safe place!) Now it is available in DVD but for the longest time it was unavailable
Why all the conversation? Because this was one of my favourite surf flicks of all time. Along with "The Endless Summer", "Big Wednesday", "Five Summer Stories", "Storm Riders", "Morning of the Earth", "Evolution", "Breaking Down the Door", and "Pacific Vibrations"
OK so here's the video - opening sequence with soundtrack by Pablo Crusie "Zero to Sixty in Five" and check out Rabbit's barrel at the 2 min. mark followed by Shaun's....both in my opinion a couple of the best moments in surf movie history.
The other highlight in the movie is the surfing of MR...especially the Honolua Bay on Maui segment.....just epic!
